Theres really no point in going with a Detroit or aussie, seeing is how they are more money for the SAME thing... Ive had my lockrite for about 3 years, and COUNTless Km...id say about 60xxx to 80xxx km on it and its mint...

well considering money isn't exactly rolling in right now I'd like to go with something affordable

been looking at other forums and people seem satisfied with their lockrites

I have an 87' 4x4 p/u, 22 RE. I think i have a 9" rear diff... but not completely positive

at the risk of looking lazy, anyone know where I should/could buy one of these ?

you have a 8'' diff, i think you have 410 gears, if you go with bigger tires id go with 456 out of a v6...then you can get the lockrite...part number 1620

Trail Gear, or Marlin Crawler. The Detroit has a better road manners then the Lockrite for sure, I've had both.

For 8" 4 cyl diffs you need a Lockright 1610, for a V6 diff you need a 1620. It depends if you want to keep your 4.10's or hunt for a pair of 4.56's.. Finding 4.56's is actually a pain in the ass, despite what others might say.. If you stay with 31's you'll be fine with 4.10's but if you go with 33's I'd regear to 4.56 or 4.88, '56 if you drive on the highway a lot as the '88s will rev higher.

I just ordered a Lockright 1620 off lowrangeoffroad, they were one of the cheapest I found.. Should be here Monday. Don't listen to Cale, ordering an Aussie is a huge pain in the ass and not worth the hassle considering a lockright is identical. My locker was 275 shipped, an Aussie would have run me 360 shipped..

For a 4 cyl diff I believe you'll need to buy a rebuild kit for your diff as well, whereas the V6 you don't.. Putting a locker in a 4 cyl diff is harder..

I would like to regear to 4.56 while putting in the locker, but like you said I have no idea where to get the gears

would it be possible to order them from a dealer? where did you get your locker from?

Possibly a Tacoma e-locker, or a full Tacoma housing.

Find 4.56 gears locally or buy them from like yotatech / ttora / pirate4x4.. Be patient they pop up.. Buy complete third members as it'll be far cheaper in the long run.

And Cale I was saying don't listen to you about getting an Aussie as I actually went through the process of trying to order one - you bought your shit off yotatech, way easier on your part..

And I bought my diff setup kit and locker from lowrangeoffroad.com, everyone else gets their stuff from trail-gear.com and used from yotatech.

Well I'm thinkin you have rough riders? I would invest in some better tires first. I have some for you right now.. 33x12.50 90% tread.. with rims 700

lol hey hey nothing compares to a MT Baja Claw haha

as for a locker.. i have a detroit in the front of my truck and a Lock Right in the rear.
Lock Right and Aussie are the best bang for buck out there PERIOD but there are better options if u got the cash. Detroit is a mechanical locker and in my opinion the most reliable. e-locker (electric lockers) have been known to fail if they are submerged in water without a perfect seal. ARB (air locker) so u would need an air pump or a tank with compressed air, the downside of the ARB is if it fails it will blow all the seals in ur rear diff.

I wouldnt bother buying a new 4.56 ring and pinion and then setting it up in ur diff because u can find them in scrap yards.. i would suggest buying a ring and pinion gear set if you are going with 4.88 or 5.29..

If you have any questions just PM me.

cool, thanks for the advice guys

I figure I'm gonna go with a lockright and buy a 4.88 ring and pinion

I do still have the 31" M+S on right now, 33x12.5 would be nice...money is a bit tight though

oh and yeah I got the framework done, shes solid now, couple spots starting to rot so It looks like I'll be chasing it around until I decide to get another parts truck with a good frame.
