Default Toyota 4RUNNER rebuild thread

PAGE 1 - 4cyl diff rebuild
PAGE 4 - gear drive trans and t-case swap
PAGE 5 - bodywork and paint

Pulled my diff today to replace a pinion bearing turns out some of the teeth on the pinion gear are a 'little' chewed up.. If anyone knows where to find a 5.29 pinion gear (should have 7 teeth) out of a Toyota 4cyl diff that would be great.

hey marc... you can't just replace a pinion and leave the ring... you have to replace them as a set. you'll have a hard time finding a used set, since im assuming 5.29 doesn't come standard, does it? it's aftermarket only, right? so just buy a brand new ring and pinion. and, while you're at it, make sure they're installed properly.

5.29's dont come stock on anything. Ive heard of people swaping them all the time? But if he cant find any used, thats the route he will have to take.

If I find a used 5.29 pinion gear why can't I leave the ring gear I have now?

first of all... good luck finding a pinion gear alone, for sale.

second of all... rings and pinions are matched to each other. they're not all exactly the same. you gotta realize how much stress is put onto these gears. if you just use any random ring and pinion together, the odds are likely that they wont last too long. getting the proper backlash and a nice pattern would be pretty tough with random gears put together. they're a "matching set" for a reason.

why would marc want it locked??? he doesn't seem to care about a front drive shaft, so why would he want both rear tires spinning? lol

I can't afford a 900 dollar drive shaft after spending 1300 on tires =) maybe next month.

Well, $150 for gears, $100 for bearings, and $400ish for the locker is $650 so $450 isn't that bad.
